Salem-

John "Jr" Hughes, Sr., on the evening of October 10, 2023, passed away at Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH as a

result of natural causes. He was comforted by his loving wife Betty, of 68 years.

John was born in the town of Negley, Ohio on March 15, 1936. He was the 6th child, and the 4th

son, of Mary and John W. Hughes.

He spent his early years being raised in the Rogers area of Ohio. In 1952 he went to the big city

of Waterford to attend High School, where he and Betty first met. At just 16 years of age, John

enlisted March 13, 1953, with the U.S. Army. He deployed in November of 1953. Serving 18

months at the 38 th Parallel in Korea as a Heavy Equipment Operator with H&S Company 538 th .

He returned home in May of 1955 to later marry Betty on June 5, 1955. He was honorably

discharged March 12, 1956, to the Army Reserves, where his service obligation was fulfilled

March 1961.

John made a living driving semi-trucks for 50 years. Where he was proud to have driven to 49

states and to have "been to all 50 states in the Union" as he put it. When he was home from the

road, he enjoyed watching his Green Bay Packers and Nascar races. Through the years he loved

spending his free time with all of his grandchildren, fishing, watching old western shows,

reading, and telling stories about what and where he hauled across the nation.

He was preceded in death by his father John W. and mother Mary; brothers Earnest, Thomas, and

Charles; sisters Thelma Jean, Doris, and Elsa.

John Sr. is survived by his wife, Betty; son John Jr. and his wife Dianne, daughter Kathy and her

husband Denny, son Jeffrey and his wife Kay, son Rodney Sr. and his wife Peggy;

Grandchildren: John III, Amber, Lindsay, Kristin, Doug, Shane, Isaac, Theressa, Ashley, and Rodney Jr.; Great

Grandchildren: Kyla, Jasmine, Jeremiah, Kylee, Tyson, Michael, Macy, Lydia, Allison, Jeffrey, Gwendolyn, Aurora,

Collin, Benjamin, Adam, Rodney III, and Peyton; Great-Great Grandchild: Adeline.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 4:00-6:00 PM at the funeral home. A funeral service will be

held 10:30 AM Monday at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine with Pastor Aimee Raymond

officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.
